nicole reynolds - poems

one two three waltz

the monster at the end of the day
reads the minutes
washes away the day dreams
to make way
for the night dreams
like i let go of a balloon
to see how fast
it would rise
but immediately wanted it back
once it had left
afraid some bird would choke

the monster at the end of the day
pounds at the organ
the songs i ignored
in the light of the sun
whirl in the darkness of the night
in a waltz

one two three
one two three

until i finally fall asleep
in a steam shovel silence
